Position your role within a technical project environment
Employers and USCIS both scrutinize whether coordinator roles meet the specialty occupation standard. Framing your experience within IT, engineering, or construction project delivery strengthens the case that a specific bachelor's degree is required.
Highlight your degree-to-role alignment in your resume
H-1B approval depends partly on whether your degree field directly matches the job. A degree in project management, business administration, engineering, or information systems maps cleanly. Unrelated degrees increase the risk of a Request for Evidence.
Target employers with established H-1B filing histories
Companies that regularly sponsor project management roles have internal processes and immigration counsel in place. Approaching these employers reduces the friction of convincing a hiring manager that sponsorship is feasible for this job title.
Understand the TN visa path if you hold Canadian or Mexican citizenship
TN classification is available for management consultants, which some Project Management Coordinator roles qualify under. It is faster and cheaper than H-1B, with no lottery, and can be a practical first step into U.S. employment.
Prepare for potential Requests for Evidence on specialty occupation
USCIS sometimes challenges coordinator titles as insufficiently specialized. Having a detailed offer letter that specifies technical responsibilities, required tools, and the necessity of a degree in a specific field significantly reduces denial risk.
Use Migrate Mate to identify employers actively sponsoring this role
Not every company that posts project coordinator jobs will sponsor visas. Migrate Mate surfaces roles from employers with verified sponsorship histories, saving you from applying to positions where international candidates are quietly screened out.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Project Management Coordinator role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
It depends on how the role is structured. Coordinator positions in IT, construction, or engineering projects qualify more consistently because USCIS can verify that a degree in a specific field is an industry requirement. Generic administrative coordinator roles face more scrutiny. The offer letter's description of technical duties and required qualifications is the most important factor in the determination.
Which visa types are most commonly used to sponsor Project Management Coordinators?
H-1B visa is the most common path. Canadian and Mexican citizens may qualify for TN visa status under the management consultant category, which is faster and avoids the H-1B lottery. Applicants already in the U.S. on OPT or STEM OPT can use that period to secure an employer willing to file an H-1B visa petition before status expires.
What degree do I need for a sponsored Project Management Coordinator position?
A bachelor's degree in project management, business administration, engineering, information systems, or a closely related field is the standard baseline. Some employers also accept degrees paired with a PMP or CAPM certification as evidence of specialized knowledge. A degree in an unrelated discipline, such as liberal arts, makes the specialty occupation argument harder to sustain and may trigger a Request for Evidence from USCIS.
How do I find Project Management Coordinator jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate filters job listings specifically to roles where employers have a documented history of sponsoring work visas. This matters for coordinator roles because sponsorship willingness varies significantly by company size and industry. Browsing Migrate Mate lets you focus your applications on employers who have already demonstrated they will support the H-1B or other visa process for this title.
Can I switch employers while on H-1B sponsorship as a Project Management Coordinator?
Yes. H-1B portability allows you to change employers once your transfer petition is filed, as long as your original petition has been approved and you are moving into a role in the same or a closely related specialty occupation. Your new employer files an H-1B transfer petition and you can typically start working immediately upon receipt, without waiting for approval.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Project Management Coordinator jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
