Target employers who already sponsor PMs
Companies with established H-1B programs, like large defense contractors, consulting firms, and tech companies, sponsor Project Management Specialists far more reliably than smaller firms. Check a company's public LCA filings before investing time in an application.
Match your degree to the role description
USCIS requires your degree field to directly relate to project management. Degrees in engineering, business administration, or information systems support stronger petitions. A general studies degree, even at bachelor's level, creates unnecessary specialty occupation risk.
Pursue PMP certification before you apply
The Project Management Professional certification signals industry-level qualification to both employers and USCIS. It strengthens the specialty occupation argument by demonstrating the role requires specialized knowledge beyond what any generalist could perform.
Clarify the industry context in your offer letter
Project management means different things in construction, IT, healthcare, and aerospace. Ask your employer to include specific technical responsibilities in your offer letter. Vague job descriptions invite USCIS Requests for Evidence on specialty occupation grounds.
Use premium processing if your start date is tight
USCIS premium processing guarantees a decision within 15 business days. If you're transitioning between employers or starting a role with a fixed date, ask your employer upfront whether they'll cover this option. Many established sponsors do.

Find Project Management Specialist JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Does a Project Management Specialist role qualify as an H-1B specialty occupation?
Yes, but the job description matters significantly. USCIS looks for evidence that a specific bachelor's degree in a relevant field, such as business administration, engineering, or information systems, is the normal minimum requirement for the position. Roles framed around generic coordination tasks without degree-specific requirements face higher rates of Requests for Evidence. The strongest petitions come from employers in industries like IT, construction, defense, or consulting where PM roles carry defined technical scope.
What degree do I need for an employer to sponsor my H-1B as a Project Management Specialist?
A bachelor's degree in business administration, engineering, information systems, or a closely related technical field is the standard baseline. USCIS requires the degree to be specifically related to the duties of the role, not just a general four-year credential. If your degree is in an unrelated field, documented work experience, relevant certifications like PMP, and a job description that emphasizes specialized skills can help, but a strong degree match remains the cleanest path to approval.
Which industries sponsor Project Management Specialists most frequently?
Federal contractors and defense firms, large consulting practices like management and IT consulting, construction and infrastructure companies, and enterprise technology firms sponsor Project Management Specialists at high volumes based on Department of Labor LCA disclosure data. These sectors have established HR and legal infrastructure for H-1B filings and often have multiple open PM roles at any time. You can browse currently sponsored Project Management Specialist openings on Migrate Mate, where listings are filtered to show only active visa sponsors.
Can I get sponsored as a Project Management Specialist without a PMP certification?
Yes. The PMP is not a legal requirement for H-1B sponsorship. What matters to USCIS is the degree-to-role alignment and the specialty occupation argument, not professional certifications. That said, having a PMP strengthens your candidacy with employers and can support the argument that the role requires specialized knowledge, particularly when your degree field is adjacent rather than directly aligned. Treat it as a competitive advantage, not a prerequisite.
How competitive is H-1B approval for Project Management Specialist petitions?
Approval rates for Project Management Specialist H-1B petitions are moderate but more variable than in engineering or software roles. The specialty occupation determination is the main point of friction, and USCIS scrutinizes whether a specific degree is truly required versus preferred. Petitions from large, experienced sponsors with well-drafted job descriptions and strong supporting documentation historically perform better. Working with an employer who has a track record of successfully sponsoring this specific role type reduces risk considerably.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Project Management Specialist jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
