Overview:
Avalara is seeking a Sales Operations Manager to lead the strategy, design, and execution of lead routing, distribution, and CRM workflows.
This is an individual contributor role responsible for driving outcomes across routing systems and processes, while coordinating work across Sales Operations, Business Systems, and Marketing Operations.
This role owns routing performance end-to-end, ensuring leads are assigned accurately, quickly, and at scale, while driving automation, standardization, and continuous improvement across the go-to-market funnel. Using AI where it meaningfully improves the work is a core expectation for this role, driving enhanced outcomes, efficiency, quality, and scale across all operational processes.
The ideal candidate brings deep, hands-on expertise in routing technologies such as LeanData, Distribution Engine, and Chili Piper, with the ability to design, troubleshoot, and scale complex routing logic across multiple teams, while actively applying AI tools to optimize these workflows.
This is not a coordination-only role; it requires strong technical proficiency, an AI-forward mindset, and the ability to translate business needs into effective system configurations and automation.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Partnership & Lead Routing Ownership
- Own the design and governance of lead routing and distribution across all go-to-market teams
- Define and enforce routing SLAs, capacity models, and assignment logic
- Ensure alignment between routing strategy and evolving GTM priorities (Sales, SDR, Partner, Marketing)
- Act as the escalation point for complex routing issues and systemic gaps
Execution & Cross-Functional Leadership
- Drive execution of routing solutions across LeanData, Distribution Engine, Chili Piper, and Salesforce
- Coordinate work across internal admins, developers, and operations partners to deliver scalable solutions
- Translate business requirements into technical designs and ensure high-quality implementation
- Establish QA and testing standards for routing changes and enhancements
CRM Systems & Data Governance
- Oversee Salesforce workflows supporting lead management and routing
- Define and maintain data quality standards, including deduplication, enrichment, and validation
- Partner with Marketing Ops and Business Operations to ensure lifecycle alignment (MQL SQL)
Process Optimization, Automation & AI Application
- Identify inefficiencies and eliminate manual routing workarounds
- Design and implement scalable automation across the routing and CRM ecosystem
- Identify opportunities where AI can improve daily work, incorporating AI-driven improvements to optimize lead routing, distribution processes, and tool configurations
- Standardize processes to support consistency, maintainability, and growth
Analytics & Performance Management
- Define and track key routing performance metrics (SLA adherence, response times, routing accuracy, lead leakage)
- Identify bottlenecks and drive improvements that increase speed-to-lead and conversion
- Provide actionable insights to Sales and Marketing leadership to inform resourcing and GTM decisions
Qualifications
- 5+ years in Sales Operations, Marketing Operations, or Revenue Operations in a high-growth, scalable environment
- Proven experience owning and scaling lead routing and distribution processes
- Deep, hands-on expertise with LeanData, Distribution Engine, and Chili Piper (required)
- Strong understanding of lead lifecycle, pipeline management, and GTM operations
- Experience leading cross-functional initiatives without direct authority
- Ability to translate business needs into scalable system and process solutions
- Analytical mindset with a focus on driving measurable outcomes
- Strong communication skills with the ability to influence across stakeholders
- Demonstrated experience applying AI in previous work, specifically using AI to improve operational outcomes, efficiency, or quality in routing/distribution processes or systems (Candidates will be assessed on how they apply AI through real examples and outputs)

Target revenue-focused companies
SaaS companies, tech startups, and high-growth businesses frequently sponsor Sales Operations Managers because revenue optimization directly impacts their bottom line and expansion plans.
Emphasize data analysis skills
Highlight experience with Salesforce, HubSpot, Tableau, or SQL. Technical sales operations skills strengthen your specialty occupation case and appeal to H-1B sponsors.
Business degree usually suffices
Most Sales Operations Manager roles accept business administration, economics, marketing, or finance degrees. Engineering degrees can work if combined with business experience or coursework.
Show revenue impact metrics
Document how you've improved sales efficiency, reduced deal cycle times, or optimized forecasting accuracy. Quantified business impact helps justify sponsorship costs to employers.
Consider EB-2 pathway potential
Senior Sales Operations Manager roles with 5+ years experience may qualify for EB-2 green cards, especially if you manage teams or drive strategic revenue initiatives.
Research company growth stage
High-growth companies expanding sales teams are more likely to sponsor because they need systems and processes that scale. Pre-IPO companies often have sponsorship budgets.
Frequently Asked Questions
What degree do I need for Sales Operations Manager H-1B sponsorship?
A bachelor's degree in business administration, economics, marketing, finance, or a related field typically qualifies. Some employers accept degrees in statistics, mathematics, or even engineering if combined with relevant sales operations experience. The key is demonstrating how your educational background relates to the analytical and strategic aspects of sales operations work.
Do Sales Operations Manager roles commonly get H-1B approval?
Yes, Sales Operations Manager positions generally receive strong H-1B visa approval rates because they clearly require specialized knowledge of sales processes, CRM systems, data analysis, and revenue optimization. The role's analytical nature and degree requirement help establish specialty occupation status, especially at technology and SaaS companies where sales operations is mission-critical.
Can I get sponsored as a Sales Operations Manager without sales experience?
Possible but challenging. Most employers prefer candidates with some sales, business operations, or data analysis background. However, strong analytical skills, MBA education, or experience with relevant tools like Salesforce, Tableau, or SQL can compensate. Consider targeting entry-level Sales Operations Analyst roles first to build domain expertise.
Which visa types work best for Sales Operations Manager positions?
H-1B is most common and suitable for this role. Australians can use E-3 visas. Canadians and Mexicans may qualify for TN visa status under the Management Consultant category, though this requires careful positioning. L-1 visa intracompany transfers work for international sales operations professionals transferring to U.S. offices.
What happens if I change companies while on an H-1B as a Sales Operations Manager?
You can change employers, but the new company must file a fresh H-1B petition before you start working. Sales Operations Manager roles are portable between companies since the job duties and requirements are consistent across industries. You can typically start working once the new I-129 petition is received by USCIS, not when it's approved.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Sales Operations Manager jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
