Developer Jobs in USA with Visa Sponsorship
Software developer is the most heavily sponsored role category in the entire H-1B program. Thousands of U.S. employers sponsor developers every year, from FAANG companies to startups to consulting firms. H-1B, L-1, O-1, and TN (for Canadians and Mexicans) are all realistic visa paths. The main challenge isn't finding willing sponsors, and it's getting through the H-1B lottery. For detailed occupation requirements, see the O*NET profile.

How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Developer
Prioritize direct-hire roles over third-party placements
Direct employment with the company where you will work simplifies the H-1B petition because the employer-employee relationship is straightforward. Third-party and contract placements require additional documentation proving the staffing arrangement, which can increase processing time and RFE risk. When evaluating offers, weigh the sponsorship complexity alongside compensation.
Build a public portfolio that proves specialized skills
A GitHub profile with meaningful contributions, deployed applications, or technical blog posts gives employers tangible evidence of your capabilities. For visa purposes, demonstrating that your skills are specialized and not easily replicated strengthens the case that you fill a role requiring professional expertise. Focus on projects that showcase specific technical depth rather than generic tutorials.
Align your job title with recognized occupation classifications
Titles like "software developer" or "application developer" map cleanly to established occupation codes that USCIS recognizes as specialty occupations. Vague titles like "developer" or "coder" can create ambiguity in the petition process. When negotiating an offer, ask whether the company can use a standard industry title on official documentation.
Use OPT to transition from academic projects to production experience
If you graduated from a U.S. institution with a STEM-eligible degree, you may qualify for up to 36 months of work authorization through OPT and the STEM OPT extension. This window lets you build a professional track record that demonstrates your value, and employers are more likely to commit to sponsorship after seeing your on-the-job performance.
Target mid-size companies with dedicated immigration support
Large tech firms sponsor in high volume but receive massive applicant pools, while very small startups may lack immigration counsel. Mid-size companies with 500 to 5,000 employees often have established legal infrastructure for sponsorship and less competition per opening. Look for companies that mention visa sponsorship directly in their job postings as a positive signal.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
What types of developer roles are most commonly sponsored for work visas?
Software development roles across web, mobile, and application platforms are among the most frequently sponsored positions in the U.S. tech sector. Companies that build and maintain digital products - from SaaS platforms to internal enterprise tools - regularly sponsor developers. Roles with clear technical requirements and degree expectations tend to have the smoothest H-1B petition outcomes.
Do I need a computer science degree specifically to qualify for H-1B as a developer?
A computer science degree is the most straightforward match, but degrees in information technology, software engineering, mathematics, or related STEM fields can also qualify. USCIS evaluates whether the degree is directly related to the job duties, so a math degree paired with a quantitative development role can work. If your degree is in an unrelated field, a combination of relevant coursework, certifications, and progressive work experience may establish eligibility.
Are contract or staffing agency developer positions eligible for visa sponsorship?
Staffing agencies can and do sponsor H-1B visas for developers, but these arrangements add complexity because USCIS requires documentation of the end-client worksite and the employer-employee relationship. IT consulting firms like Infosys, Wipro, and Cognizant have historically been major H-1B sponsors for developer roles. Direct-hire positions generally involve simpler petition documentation.
How competitive is the H-1B lottery for developer roles?
The H-1B lottery is not occupation-specific, so developers compete in the same pool as all other applicants for the 85,000 annual cap (65,000 regular plus 20,000 for U.S. master's degree holders). Having a U.S. advanced degree improves your odds by qualifying you for an additional lottery entry.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Developer jobs?
When a U.S. employer sponsors a foreign worker for a work visa, they are legally required to pay at least the "prevailing wage" — the average wage paid to workers in the same occupation, in the same geographic area, with similar experience. This is set by the Department of Labor to prevent employers from hiring foreign workers at below-market rates. The prevailing wage varies significantly by role, location, and experience level — for example, a developer in Texas will have a different prevailing wage than the same role in a smaller state. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search.
