DevOps Jobs in USA with Visa Sponsorship
DevOps engineers who can architect CI/CD pipelines, manage cloud infrastructure, and bridge development and operations are increasingly sponsored for US work visas as companies modernize their deployment practices. Cloud-native expertise in AWS, GCP, or Azure makes DevOps professionals especially attractive to sponsors, since these skills directly impact shipping velocity and system reliability. As DevOps matures as a discipline, more employers recognize it as a distinct specialty worth sponsoring for. For detailed occupation requirements, see the O*NET profile.

How to Get Visa Sponsorship in DevOps
Earn cloud certifications to strengthen your visa case
AWS Solutions Architect, Google Cloud Professional, and Azure Administrator certifications validate specialized expertise. They help establish that your DevOps role requires a specific body of knowledge, reinforcing the specialty occupation argument.
Target SRE roles at major tech companies
Google, Meta, LinkedIn, and Netflix hire site reliability engineers and sponsor H-1B petitions under SOC 15-1252. SRE roles combine software engineering with operations, making them a strong specialty occupation fit.
Leverage the platform engineering boom
Companies like HashiCorp, Datadog, and GitLab are building the tools that power modern infrastructure and actively sponsor visas. Platform engineering roles focused on Kubernetes, Terraform, and CI/CD pipelines are in high demand across the industry.
Use STEM OPT to prove operational reliability
DevOps and SRE roles require deep system knowledge that takes time to build. With a STEM-eligible degree, you get up to 3 years of work authorization through OPT - enough time to prove you can be trusted with production infrastructure.
Position your SOC code carefully
DevOps roles can fall under SOC 15-1252 (Software Developers) or 15-1244 (Network and Computer Systems Administrators) depending on the focus. Work with your employer's immigration attorney to choose the code that best matches your actual job duties.
Explore cap-exempt roles in research infrastructure
University research computing teams and national labs need DevOps engineers to manage large-scale computing clusters. These positions are H-1B cap-exempt - no lottery required, and you can file any time of year.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Is DevOps engineering considered a specialty occupation by USCIS?
USCIS does not maintain a fixed list of approved specialty occupations. Instead, they evaluate each petition individually based on whether the role normally requires a bachelor's degree in a specific field. DevOps petitions can succeed when the employer clearly describes the role in terms of cloud architecture, infrastructure automation, and security engineering rather than generic IT operations. Referencing SOC codes for Software Developers or Computer Network Architects and listing specific technical requirements like infrastructure-as-code and CI/CD pipeline design helps establish the case.
How much do cloud certifications like AWS Solutions Architect improve my chances of getting sponsored?
Cloud certifications improve your prospects in two ways. First, they make you a more competitive candidate in hiring, since many DevOps postings explicitly require or prefer AWS, Azure, or GCP certifications. Second, they serve as documented evidence of specialized expertise in your visa petition, complementing your degree and work experience. Professional-level certifications carry more weight than associate-level ones, though neither substitutes for the bachelor's degree requirement.
Which industries sponsor DevOps engineers most actively?
SaaS companies, fintech firms, and cybersecurity companies are among the most active sponsors because their products depend on reliable, secure infrastructure. Large enterprises undergoing cloud migration also sponsor DevOps engineers heavily, particularly in financial services, healthcare, and e-commerce. Cloud-native startups building on AWS, GCP, or Azure are increasingly willing to sponsor, though they may have less immigration infrastructure than established firms.
Can the newer DevOps job title cause problems with H-1B petitions?
It can, but only if the petition is poorly framed. Some USCIS adjudicators may not be familiar with DevOps as a distinct discipline and could view it as general system administration. The fix is specific job descriptions that emphasize cloud architecture, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Pulumi), and security engineering. Employers who clearly distinguish the role from traditional IT operations and tie it to a computer science or software engineering degree have strong approval outcomes.
What prevailing wage level should I expect for DevOps engineering roles?
DevOps engineers with 2 or more years of experience typically fall into Level 2 or Level 3 on the DOL prevailing wage scale, depending on location and seniority. Senior DevOps and site reliability engineering roles often reach Level 3 or Level 4. Avoid employers who file at Level 1, as this signals both underpayment and higher petition denial risk. You can check prevailing wages for your metro area on the DOL Foreign Labor Certification Data Center website.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored DevOps jobs?
When a U.S. employer sponsors a foreign worker for a work visa, they are legally required to pay at least the "prevailing wage", the average wage paid to workers in the same occupation, in the same geographic area, with similar experience. This is set by the Department of Labor to prevent employers from hiring foreign workers at below-market rates. The prevailing wage varies significantly by role, location, and experience level. For example, a devops in California will have a different prevailing wage than the same role in a smaller state. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search Page.
