How to Get Visa Sponsorship as a Program Assistant
Target roles requiring specialized coordination skills
Look for Program Assistant positions emphasizing grant management, compliance monitoring, or stakeholder coordination. These specialized functions are more likely to meet specialty occupation requirements than general administrative roles.
Highlight relevant degree connections
Connect your degree directly to program-specific requirements. A public administration degree supports health program roles, while business degrees align with community development or social services positions.
Focus on government and nonprofit sectors
Federal agencies, state health departments, and established nonprofits frequently sponsor Program Assistant visas. These employers understand immigration processes and often have dedicated HR support for sponsorship.
Emphasize data analysis and reporting experience
Program Assistant roles involving data collection, outcome measurement, and compliance reporting are stronger visa candidates. Technical skills in database management or statistical analysis strengthen your specialty occupation case.
Research the employer's mission alignment
Demonstrate how your background connects to their specific programs. Environmental nonprofits value sustainability expertise, while healthcare organizations prioritize public health or social work knowledge for Program Assistant roles.
Consider entry-level program coordinator pathways
Some employers hire Program Assistants as stepping stones to Program Coordinator roles. Express interest in growth opportunities and show relevant experience in project management or program development.

Get Access To All JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do Program Assistant roles qualify for H-1B visa sponsorship?
Yes, when the position requires specialized knowledge in program management, data analysis, or field-specific coordination. Roles involving grant compliance, outcome evaluation, or stakeholder management typically meet specialty occupation requirements. Generic administrative duties without specialized requirements may not qualify.
What degree do I need for Program Assistant visa sponsorship?
Most sponsoring employers require a bachelor's degree in public administration, social work, business administration, nonprofit management, or the program's focus area. For health programs, degrees in public health or healthcare administration strengthen your application. The degree must directly relate to the program's specialized functions.
Which employers sponsor Program Assistant visas most frequently?
Federal agencies, state health departments, large nonprofits, and university research centers sponsor most Program Assistant visas. Organizations managing federal grants or multi-year programs often have established sponsorship processes. Healthcare systems and community development organizations also regularly sponsor these roles.
How competitive is Program Assistant visa sponsorship?
Moderately competitive, depending on specialization level. Roles requiring data analysis, grant management, or regulatory compliance have higher approval rates than general administrative positions. Government and established nonprofit employers typically have stronger sponsorship track records than smaller organizations without immigration experience.
Can Program Assistant experience lead to other sponsored roles?
Yes, Program Assistant positions often serve as pathways to Program Manager, Grant Coordinator, or Policy Analyst roles. Experience in program evaluation, stakeholder management, and compliance monitoring builds credentials for higher-level sponsored positions. Many employers promote internally rather than recruiting externally for senior program roles.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Program Assistant jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
