- Hire and develop engineers.
- Establish team processes and norms.

- Experience shipping customer-facing or partner-facing products.
- Strong systems design and architectural judgment.
- Track record of growing engineers and building team culture.
- Excellent communication skills, especially with non-engineering partners.

COMPENSATION
- Salary Range: $214,800 - $366,000 a year
Target base salary for this role is between $214,800 and $366,000 per year in San Francisco and New York. The base salary range listed for this full-time position excludes equity and benefits. How to Get Visa Sponsorship as an Engineering Manager
FAANG Companies Sponsor EM Roles as Standard
Google, Amazon, Meta, Apple, and Microsoft file thousands of H-1B petitions annually and process engineering manager sponsorship routinely. Your visa status will not be a differentiating factor in their hiring decisions. These companies have established LCA precedent for management roles.
L-1A Is the Strongest Long-Term Immigration Path
If you manage an engineering team at a multinational tech company's international office, L-1A managerial transfer has no lottery, no cap, and provides a direct path to EB-1C green card (which also skips PERM). Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Uber regularly transfer EMs from London, Bangalore, and Sydney through this pathway.
Build a Public Technical Leadership Profile
Patents, open-source project leadership, conference talks, and published technical writing support O-1 extraordinary ability classification, which bypasses the H-1B lottery entirely. Even if you pursue H-1B, a visible technical profile strengthens your candidacy because hiring managers at top companies actively source candidates with public contributions.
Growth-Stage Startups Also Sponsor
Companies that have raised Series B or later (Databricks, Figma, Notion, Vercel, Anthropic) sponsor engineering managers and have the urgency to hire leadership talent they cannot find domestically. These companies offer $150,000 to $220,000 base with significant equity upside that can exceed FAANG total compensation if the company succeeds.
Autonomous Vehicle and AI Companies Are Hiring Aggressively
Waymo, Cruise, Aurora, Tesla AI, and Anthropic, OpenAI, and other AI labs are scaling engineering organizations rapidly and need experienced managers. These companies sponsor H-1B aggressively because the domestic talent pool for ML engineering leadership is extremely thin. AI/ML management experience commands a significant premium.
TN Works for Canadian and Mexican Engineering Leaders
The Engineer category on the USMCA treaty list covers software and systems engineering management roles. Canadians can apply at the border and start the same day. TN renews indefinitely in three-year increments, making it viable as long-term work authorization without transitioning to H-1B.

What is the typical compensation for sponsored Engineering Manager roles in the U.S.?
Engineering managers at Google, Amazon, Meta, Apple, and Microsoft earn $200,000 to $300,000 in total compensation at the M1/L6 level. Senior engineering managers earn $300,000 to $420,000. Directors of engineering at major tech companies earn $400,000 to $600,000 or more with equity. H-1B LCA filings for engineering management roles show base salaries typically ranging from $160,000 to $250,000. Growth-stage startups pay $150,000 to $220,000 in base with significant equity upside.
Which visa types do Engineering Managers typically use?
H-1B is the most common and has high approval rates for engineering management roles. L-1A (managerial capacity) is widely used by multinational tech companies transferring engineering leaders to U.S. offices, with the advantage of no annual cap and a direct path to EB-1C green card. TN visas serve Canadian and Mexican citizens under the Engineer category. O-1 is used for engineering leaders with patents, significant open-source contributions, or major product launches. E-3 is available for Australians.
What types of companies sponsor Engineering Managers?
Major technology companies are the primary sponsors: Google, Amazon, Meta, Apple, Microsoft, Netflix, Stripe, Uber, and Airbnb all sponsor engineering managers routinely. Growth-stage startups that have raised Series B or later rounds also sponsor, though less predictably. Automotive and autonomous vehicle companies (Tesla, Rivian, Waymo, Cruise), aerospace (SpaceX), and fintech (Stripe, Square, Plaid) are also active sponsors for engineering leadership.
What qualifications do Engineering Manager roles require?
A bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering, electrical engineering, or a related technical field is the baseline requirement. Most engineering managers have 8 to 12 years of total experience, including at least 2 to 3 years of direct people management. Demonstrated ability to hire, develop, and retain engineers is weighted as heavily as technical depth. At senior levels, experience managing managers (M2 or higher) and scaling organizations through rapid growth are differentiating qualifications.
What is the career progression for a sponsored Engineering Manager?
The standard trajectory moves from engineering manager (managing 5 to 10 individual contributors) to senior engineering manager (managing multiple teams or managers) to director of engineering to VP of engineering. At Google, this maps to L6 manager through L8 director to VP levels. Compensation roughly doubles from EM to director level at major companies. Some engineering managers move laterally into staff or principal engineer roles if they prefer the individual contributor track. Others transition to CTO roles at startups.
