Within NMDOT, the IT Infrastructure Unit delivers enterprise level server, storage, virtualization, and data protection services that power mission critical applications and statewide operations. The IT Systems Administrator plays a key role in maintaining secure, reliable, and scalable technology systems that support the agency's workforce and protect sensitive transportation related information.
As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to received three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.
Interviews are anticipated to be conducted within two weeks of closing date.
PURPOSE:
The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) depends on a stable and secure IT environment to manage its extensive transportation infrastructure, including roads, transit systems, railways, airports, maintenance operations, and statewide field offices. The IT Systems Administrator ensures that core enterprise systems remain operational, secure, and optimized so staff across the agency can perform their duties without interruption. This position is essential for maintaining the availability, reliability, and integrity of NMDOT's IT infrastructure.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The primary responsibilities of this position will include:
- Administering and maintaining enterprise compute, storage, virtualization, and data protection platforms.
- Managing and monitoring physical and virtual server environments to ensure consistent performance, uptime, and capacity.
- Applying system updates, patches, and configuration changes to address vulnerabilities and align with cybersecurity and compliance standards.
- Overseeing enterprise backup and recovery processes, including scheduling, verification, troubleshooting, and periodic restoration testing.
- Responding to infrastructure alerts and taking proactive action to prevent service interruptions.
- Supporting the deployment of new systems, applications, and services across the agency's technical footprint.
- Contributing to system documentation, operational procedures, and continuous improvement of infrastructure reliability.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems (MIS), Information Technology, Engineering, or similar technical degree and two (2) years of experience in systems administration. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive phone and personal computer usage. Direct client interaction and some travel may be required. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle.
