Target healthcare systems and hospitals
Large hospital networks like Kaiser Permanente, Cleveland Clinic, and Mayo Clinic regularly sponsor H-1B visas for nurse practitioners to fill critical staffing gaps in specialty care.
Emphasize your specialty certification
Board certifications in family practice, acute care, or psychiatric mental health strengthen your H-1B case by demonstrating specialized knowledge beyond general nursing practice.
Consider underserved area positions
Rural hospitals and federally qualified health centers often have easier H-1B approval rates due to demonstrated need for healthcare professionals in shortage areas.
Highlight your MSN degree requirements
Most NP positions explicitly require a Master's in Nursing, making the specialty occupation argument straightforward compared to roles with flexible degree requirements.
Apply through healthcare recruiters
Specialized healthcare staffing firms like AMN Healthcare and Cross Country understand visa sponsorship processes and maintain relationships with sponsoring employers across multiple states.
Network through professional associations
Join the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and attend state chapter meetings to connect with NPs at sponsoring organizations and learn about opportunities.

Find Nurse Practitioner JobsFrequently Asked Questions
Do nurse practitioners qualify for H-1B sponsorship?
Yes, nurse practitioners qualify for H-1B sponsorship as healthcare professionals with specialized graduate training. The role requires an MSN degree and meets specialty occupation requirements. Approval rates are strong in healthcare settings, particularly hospitals and specialty clinics.
What degree requirements do employers expect for visa sponsorship?
Employers typically require a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from an accredited program, plus active RN licensure in the state where you'll practice. Some positions may accept a Bachelor's in Nursing with equivalent experience, but MSN requirements strengthen the H-1B specialty occupation case.
Which healthcare employers most commonly sponsor nurse practitioners?
Large hospital systems, academic medical centers, and federally qualified health centers sponsor most NP visas. Organizations like Kaiser Permanente, Cleveland Clinic, and Veterans Affairs have established sponsorship programs. Rural hospitals also sponsor frequently due to staffing shortages.
Can I get sponsored as a new graduate nurse practitioner?
Yes, but it's more challenging than for experienced NPs. New graduates should target employers with structured NP residency programs, rural hospitals with training initiatives, or specialty practices seeking specific clinical backgrounds from your MSN concentration.
How to find Nurse Practitioner jobs with visa sponsorship?
To find Nurse Practitioner jobs with visa sponsorship, use Migrate Mate, which specializes in connecting healthcare professionals with sponsoring employers. Focus on healthcare systems, hospitals, medical centers, and rural health facilities that commonly sponsor H-1B and EB-2/EB-3 visas for NPs. These employers often face staffing shortages and actively recruit international nurse practitioners to fill critical care positions.
Do I need state nursing licensure before applying for H-1B sponsorship?
You don't need active licensure before the H-1B petition, but you must be eligible for licensure in the state where you'll work. Most employers prefer candidates who can obtain licensure quickly through compact state agreements or endorsement processes.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Nurse Practitioner jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
