Professional Engineer Jobs in USA with Visa Sponsorship
Professional Engineer roles in the U.S. are among the most consistently sponsored positions across civil, mechanical, electrical, and structural disciplines. Employers regularly file H-1B visa and E-3 visa petitions for licensed and pre-licensure engineers, and PE licensure can strengthen both your application and your long-term green card pathway.

Lead with your engineering discipline and licensure status
Visa petitions for Professional Engineers require a clear degree-to-role match. Specify your discipline, civil, structural, mechanical, and whether you hold a PE license or are EIT-certified. Both strengthen the specialty occupation case your employer files.
Target firms with an established H-1B or E-3 filing history
Large civil and infrastructure firms, utilities, and engineering consultancies file sponsorship petitions regularly. Smaller firms may be willing but lack the internal process. Prioritizing experienced sponsors reduces delays and avoids employers learning the process on your timeline.
Understand that PE licensure is state-specific and transferable
A PE license issued in one state can transfer through comity to others, but your visa petition is tied to the sponsoring employer's location. Factor state licensing timelines into your job search if relocation across state lines is part of the offer.
Document the degree requirement in your job offer letter
For specialty occupation approval, USCIS must see that the role requires at least a bachelor's degree in a specific engineering field. Ask your employer to include this language explicitly in the offer letter before the petition is filed.
Australian citizens should ask about E-3 as a faster alternative to H-1B
The E-3 visa is available only to Australians, has no lottery, and can be renewed indefinitely. Engineering roles qualify routinely. If you hold Australian citizenship, this is often the fastest path to starting work without waiting for an H-1B selection cycle.
Flag your EB-2 or EB-3 eligibility early in conversations with employers
Professional Engineer roles with a required bachelor's degree qualify under EB-3. Those requiring a master's or equivalent may qualify under EB-2. Raising green card sponsorship in later-stage interviews signals long-term commitment without making it the lead ask.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Professional Engineer role qualify as a specialty occupation for H-1B purposes?
Yes, in almost all cases. Engineering roles requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in a specific engineering discipline, civil, mechanical, electrical, structural, and others, consistently satisfy USCIS's specialty occupation criteria. The key is that your employer's job description must state that the degree is required, not merely preferred. Roles where any unrelated bachelor's degree would be accepted are more likely to face a Request for Evidence.
Do I need a PE license to get visa sponsorship as an engineer?
No, a PE license is not required for visa sponsorship. The H-1B visa and E-3 visa petitions are based on your academic degree and the role's requirements, not licensure. That said, holding a PE license or Engineer-in-Training certification strengthens your profile and can support the specialty occupation argument. Some employers, particularly on public infrastructure projects, will require licensure as a condition of employment regardless of visa status.
How does an Australian three-year engineering degree affect E-3 eligibility?
Australian three-year bachelor's degrees are generally accepted as equivalent to U.S. four-year degrees for E-3 visa purposes. USCIS and consular officers regularly approve E-3 petitions for graduates of Australian universities holding three-year Bachelor of Engineering degrees. If your degree is in a closely related field rather than the exact engineering discipline the role requires, a credential evaluation from a recognized service can help document the equivalency and reduce the risk of additional scrutiny.
What green card pathway is available for sponsored Professional Engineers?
Most Professional Engineer roles qualify under the EB-3 employment-based immigrant visa category, which covers professionals with a U.S. bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent. Roles requiring a master's degree or roles where you can demonstrate exceptional ability may qualify under EB-2. Both categories require PERM labor certification before the employer files an I-140 petition. Priority dates for EB-3 can involve multi-year waits for nationals of high-demand countries, so starting the process early matters.
Where can I find Professional Engineer jobs that offer visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is built specifically for international engineers and skilled professionals seeking U.S. roles with confirmed visa sponsorship. Rather than filtering through general job listings where sponsorship status is unclear, Migrate Mate surfaces roles from employers with active sponsorship histories. Searching by engineering discipline and location on Migrate Mate narrows results to positions where your visa situation is already accounted for.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Professional Engineer jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
