How to Get Visa Sponsorship in Construction
Know the difference between trade roles and professional roles
Skilled trade positions like electrician, plumber, and welder typically use the H-2B visa path, while construction management, civil engineering, and architectural roles can qualify for H-1B. Your visa options depend heavily on whether the position requires a specific degree.
Target H-1B for construction management with the right credentials
A bachelor's degree in construction management, civil engineering, or a related field combined with a PMP (Project Management Professional) certification supports an H-1B petition for project management roles. General contractor experience alone won't meet the specialty occupation standard.
Use the TN visa if you're a Canadian or Mexican engineer
Canadian and Mexican citizens working in civil engineering, architecture, or related fields can use TN visa status under the USMCA agreement. TN has no annual cap, can be renewed indefinitely, and doesn't require an employer petition - just a job offer and qualifying credentials.
Prepare for competitive H-2B filing in construction
Construction is one of the largest H-2B user industries, and the 66,000 annual cap fills quickly. Employers must begin the recruitment and filing process months before the work start date to have a realistic chance at securing visas.
Pursue construction engineering roles at large firms
Companies like Bechtel, Fluor, Turner Construction, and AECOM hire engineers and project managers with H-1B sponsorship. Roles in structural engineering, project controls, and construction technology carry stronger visa arguments than field supervision alone.
Build toward project management for better long-term visa options
Starting in a trade role on H-2B and building toward a project management or superintendent position can open H-1B eligibility down the road. Earning a construction management degree or PMP certification while working accelerates this transition.

What visa types are used for construction jobs with sponsorship?
H-2B is the most common visa for construction roles, covering temporary or seasonal positions. EB-3 "Other Workers" is used for permanent positions. Some specialized construction management or engineering roles may qualify for H-1B if they require a bachelor's degree. The right pathway depends on whether the position is seasonal or year-round and the skill level required.
Do I need trade certifications for a sponsored construction job?
Requirements vary by role. General labor positions typically don't require certifications, but specialized trades like electrical, plumbing, or HVAC may require or prefer specific licenses or certifications. Some employers provide training and certification support as part of the sponsorship arrangement, especially for H-2B seasonal workers.
What types of construction jobs are most commonly sponsored?
General laborers, carpenters, concrete workers, roofers, painters, and landscaping/site preparation workers are among the most commonly sponsored construction positions. Specialized trades like electricians and plumbers are also sponsored but may have additional licensing requirements that vary by state.
Is construction work seasonal for visa sponsorship purposes?
It depends on the region and type of work. In northern states, outdoor construction is often seasonal, making H-2B the appropriate visa. In warmer climates like the South and Southwest, construction operates year-round, and employers may sponsor through EB-3 for permanent positions. The employer must demonstrate the nature of the need when filing the petition.
Can construction workers eventually get a green card?
Yes. Workers on H-2B temporary visas can be separately sponsored for an EB-3 green card if the employer wants to retain them permanently. The two processes are independent - H-2B status doesn't convert to a green card automatically, but having an established employer relationship makes the transition more likely.
What is the prevailing wage requirement for sponsored Construction jobs?
When a U.S. employer sponsors a foreign worker for a work visa, they are legally required to pay at least the "prevailing wage", the average wage paid to workers in the same occupation, in the same geographic area, with similar experience. This is set by the Department of Labor to prevent employers from hiring foreign workers at below-market rates. The prevailing wage varies significantly by role, location, and experience level. For example, a construction in Texas will have a different prevailing wage than the same role in a smaller state. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search Page.
