Top Industries for Green Card Sponsorship
How to Get Green Card Sponsorship
Target Fortune 500 companies and government contractors for EB-2/EB-3 sponsorship
Large corporations like Microsoft, Amazon, and Boeing routinely sponsor green cards through established legal teams. Government contractors also frequently sponsor due to security clearance requirements favoring permanent residents over temporary visa holders.
Understand PERM processing adds 12-24 months before filing your I-140 petition
The PERM labor certification process requires your employer to test the U.S. job market first. This mandatory step occurs before your actual green card petition, significantly extending total processing time compared to temporary visas.
Choose EB-3 over EB-2 if you're from India or China to avoid longer backlogs
EB-3 often has shorter wait times than EB-2 for Indian and Chinese nationals due to per-country limits. You can downgrade from EB-2 to EB-3 later if backlogs shift, preserving your priority date.
Apply to healthcare systems and universities for reliable green card sponsorship
Hospitals, university medical centers, and academic institutions frequently sponsor physicians, researchers, and specialized staff. These employers often have dedicated immigration departments and predictable sponsorship budgets for permanent positions.
Build U.S. work experience on a temporary visa to strengthen your green card case
Many employers prefer sponsoring green cards for workers already proving their value internally. Starting on an H-1B, L-1, or O-1 visa lets you demonstrate impact while your employer builds the business case for permanent sponsorship.
Secure a role requiring specialized skills that justify PERM labor certification
Your position must genuinely require specific education or experience that limits the available U.S. worker pool. Generic roles with broad requirements make PERM certification difficult for your employer to obtain successfully.

What is the difference between EB-1, EB-2, and EB-3 green cards?
EB-1 is for individuals with extraordinary ability, outstanding professors/researchers, or multinational managers. EB-2 covers professionals with advanced degrees or exceptional ability. EB-3 is for skilled workers with at least two years of experience, professionals with bachelor's degrees, and other workers. Most employer-sponsored green cards fall under EB-2 or EB-3 because they use the PERM labor certification process.
How long does the green card sponsorship process take?
The timeline varies widely. PERM labor certification alone typically takes 8 to 14 months. After PERM approval, the I-140 petition takes 4 to 12 months unless premium processing is used. Then you wait for a visa number based on your priority date and country of birth. For applicants from India and China, the backlog can stretch several years.
How to find green card sponsorship jobs?
Migrate Mate filters jobs by visa type, so you can see which employers are actively sponsoring EB-2/EB-3 green cards right now. Look for mid-to-large companies in technology, healthcare, finance, and engineering, which have established PERM processes. Many companies that sponsor H-1B visas also sponsor green cards for long-term employees.
Do I need an H-1B before getting a green card through an employer?
No. While many people transition from H-1B to green card status, an employer can start the PERM process regardless of your current visa type. Some workers on L-1, O-1, TN, or even F-1 OPT status have employers file green card petitions directly. The key requirement is a qualifying job offer and a willing employer, not a specific prior visa.
Which industries sponsor the most green cards?
Technology and software companies are the largest green card sponsors by volume, followed by healthcare, financial services, consulting, and engineering firms. Large employers like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Deloitte, and major hospital systems regularly file PERM applications. Smaller companies also sponsor, especially in areas with labor shortages like nursing, accounting, and specialized manufacturing.
What is the prevailing wage for green card sponsorship jobs?
U.S. employers sponsoring a visa must pay at least the prevailing wage, which is what workers in the same role, area, and experience level typically earn. The Department of Labor sets this rate to make sure companies aren't hiring foreign workers simply because they'd accept lower pay than a U.S. worker. It varies by job title, location, and experience. You can look up current prevailing wage rates for any occupation and location using the OFLC Wage Search page.
